The 6th Athens Biennale ANTI presents its first work in urban space.
For six days, from September 17 to 22, 2018 a mobile cool shelter invites Athenians at different hot locations in the city of Athens. The Microclimatic Heat Shelter is the art installation built by The Laboratory for Microclimates, an initiative of the artists Annechien Meier and Gert-Jan Gerlach from Holland.
Since 2017, the two artists started researching the effects of climate change in Athens by looking into aspects such as temperature, wind, water, vegetation, social and urban structures. Through various meetings, they gathered information on the current climatic situation in Athens. According to Botanist Dionisis Mermigas of the Goulandris Natural History Museum, certain species of local plants most likely will have disappeared by 2050 due to climate change, but also that, next to rising temperatures, the number of extreme warm days will increase. Dr. Dimitra Founda, Senior Researcher at the National Observatory of Athens, underlined that due to the effects of climate change the city of Athens is suffering increasingly from heat waves in the summer season.
In order to address the “Athenian condition” the two artists came up with the idea to build a general mobile shelter for all the citizens of Athens to provide a cool microclimate during these heat waves, which can be transported to and displayed at different hot locations in the city.
The “Microclimatic Heat Shelter” will also function as a social microclimate where people can meet up, relax and inspire each other to change their personal environment into a more pleasant and climate proof environment.
The aim of the installation is to inspire people to take action in order to reduce the effects of climate change, awareness of food by changing their own personal environment.
Annechien Meier and Gert-Jan Gerlach and their Laboratory for Micro-climates (LfM) have been invited to set up an interactive mobile climate chamber in the sixth Athens Biennale, to introduce visitors to innovative and creative ways of generating cool air in various parts of the city. The goal is to inspire and encourage visitors to improve their direct life environment and so to mitigate the effects of climate change. Besides offering a shelter against the heat, the Microclimatic Heat Shelter also functions as a social micro-climate where people can meet each other and share their experiences. The project aims to put Greece’s urban heat issue on the agenda and to draw attention to the work by LfM and to the Netherlands as a creative and innovative hub for climate-related design solutions.

– Friday, September 21 at the beginning of Dionysiou Areopagitou pedestrian Street (Melina Merkouri statue)
– Saturday, September 22 at Agion Asomaton square

Η 6η Μπιενάλε της Αθήνας ΑΝΤΙ παρουσιάζει το πρώτο της έργο στο δημόσιο χώρο, στο κέντρο της Αθήνας.
Για έξι ημέρες, από την Δευτέρα 17 Σεπτεμβρίου έως το Σάββατο 22 Σεπτεμβρίου, μια κινητή μονάδα δροσιάς θα περιμένει τους Αθηναίους σε διάφορα κεντρικά σημεία της πόλης. Πρόκειται για το Microclimatic Heat Shelter, το κινητό «καταφύγιο» που κατασκευάζει ειδικά για την 6η Μπιενάλε της Αθήνας ΑΝΤΙ η ομάδα Laboratory for Microclimates από την Ολλανδία, των καλλιτεχνών Annechien Meier και Gert-Jan Gerlach.
Οι δύο καλλιτέχνες ξεκίνησαν ήδη από το 2017 την έρευνά τους στο κέντρο της Αθήνας εξετάζοντας διαφορετικές παραμέτρους όπως η θερμοκρασία, ο αέρας, το νερό και η βλάστηση, οι κοινωνικές και αστικές δομές. Επισκέφτηκαν αρμόδιους φορείς και συζήτησαν με Έλληνες επιστήμονες. Ο βοτανολόγος Διονύσης Μέρμηγκας από το Μουσείο Γουλανδρή Φυσικής Ιστορίας επεσήμανε ότι εξαιτίας της αλλαγής του κλίματος ορισμένα είδη εγχώριων φυτών πιθανότατα θα έχουν εξαφανιστεί μέχρι το 2050, καθώς και ότι ο αριθμός των πολύ θερμών ημερών θα αυξηθεί. Η Δρ. Δήμητρα Φούντα, ερευνήτρια του Εθνικού Αστεροσκοπείου Αθηνών υπογράμμισε ότι η Αθήνα, εξαιτίας της κλιματικής αλλαγής, θα υποφέρει όλο και περισσότερο από καύσωνες τη θερινή περίοδο.
Για να αναδείξουν το “αθηναϊκό πρόβλημα” η Annechien Meier και ο Gert-Jan Gerlach κατέληξαν στην ιδέα της κατασκευής μιας κινητής μονάδας δροσιάς, για όλους τους πολίτες της Αθήνας, η οποία λειτουργεί με “πράσινη” τεχνολογία προσφέροντας ένα δροσερό μικροκλίμα, μερικούς βαθμούς Κελσίου πιο δροσερό από το εξωτερικό περιβάλλον.
Η εγκατάσταση ολοκληρώνεται αυτές τις ημέρες στην Αθήνα χρησιμοποιώντας ανακυκλωμένα υλικά και φυσικούς πόρους.
Το “Microclimatic Heat Shelter” λειτουργεί επίσης και ως ένα κοινωνικό μικροκλίμα, όπου οι Αθηναίοι μπορούν να συναντηθούν, να χαλαρώσουν και να ανταλλάξουν απόψεις και ιδέες. Στόχος της εγκατάστασης είναι να εμπνεύσει τους ανθρώπους να αναλάβουν δράση για να μειώσουν τις επιπτώσεις της αλλαγής του κλίματος, αλλάζοντας το δικό τους προσωπικό περιβάλλον.

Το Microclimatic Heat Shelter σας περιμένει από το μεσημέρι (12 μ.μ.) έως το απόγευμα (6 μ.μ.) στα εξής σημεία:
– Δευτέρα 17 Σεπτεμβρίου στην αφετηρία των λεωφορείων στην οδό Ακαδημίας
– Τρίτη 18 Σεπτεμβρίου στην πλατεία Βικτωρίας
– Τετάρτη 19 Σεπτεμβρίου στην πλατεία Κυψέλης
– Πέμπτη 20 Σεπτεμβρίου στην πλατεία Κοτζιά
– Παρασκευή 21 Σεπτεμβρίου στην αρχή του πεζόδρομου Διονυσίου Αρεοπαγίτου (προτομή Μελίνας Μερκούρη)
– Σάββατο 22 Σεπτεμβρίου στην πλατεία Αγ. Ασωμάτων
