Τα μυρμήγκια είναι περίεργα και συναρπαστικά. Η φύση έχει προνοήσει για την ύπαρξη της αρχετυπικής κοινωνίας στο μικρότερο των κλιμάκων, όπου κάθε οντότητα γνωρίζει το ρόλο της και να συμβάλλει στην προώθηση του συλλογικού συμφέροντος. Τα μυρμήγκια ζουν με βάση την άκαμπτη πειθαρχία ως προς τους άλλους συνεργάτες τους μυρμήγκια.
Το Ant Ballet είναι μια προσαρμογή της κοινωνικής συμπεριφοράς των μυρμηγκιών, με την ένταση ενός από τα βασικά τους ένστικτα, την έλξη στις φερομόνες, τις οποίες τα μυρμήγκια χρησιμοποιούν για επικοινωνία. Ο Ollie Palmer μελέτησε τα μυρμήγκια, ειδικά τα Αργεντίνικα Linepithema Humile, προκειμένου να χορογραφήσει τις κινήσεις τους. Με χρήση συνθετικών φερομόνων και ενός ηλεκτρονικού συστήματος όρασης, σε συνεργασία ένα ρομποτικό βραχίονα με σπρέι φερομόνης από σκόνη (που δημιουργήθηκε από το τμήμα Οργανικής Χημείας του UCL) χαράσσει μονοπάτια που προκαλούν τα μυρμήγκια να ακολουθήσουν διαδρομές διαφορετικές από εκείνες που θα έπρεπε κανονικά να ακολουθήσουν προς αναζήτηση τροφής, δημιουργώντας με αυτόν τον τρόπο μια ιδιαίτερη και πρωτότυπη χορογραφία. Ο designer έχει εξετάσει την εγκατάσταση στην Βαρκελώνη, λογω του χαρακτηρισμού αυτού του είδους μυρμηγκιού ως επιθετικό και χωροκατακτητικό στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο.
Το project χωρίζεται σε τέσσερις φάσεις βάσει της sci-fi ταινία Phase IV. Στην ταινία, οι επιστήμονες προβληματίζονται από τα πολύπλοκα σχέδια τα οποία τα μυρμήγκια έχουν αρχίσει την οικοδομούν στην έρημο.
Η πρώτη φάση του Ant Ballet (2010-2012) είναι αυτή που εκτίθεται στο FutureEverything? Καλύπτει μια ενδελεχή έρευνα για τα μυρμήγκια και τα συστήματα ελέγχου, τη σύνθεση των φερομόνων και τον έλεγχο της εγκατάστασης με ζωντανά μυρμήγκια στην πόλη της Βαρκελώνη. Στις φάσεις II-IV (2012-2015) θα αναπτυχτούν περαιτέρω τεχνολογίες, χημικές ουσίες και μηχανισμοί. Το 2013 η πρώτη δημόσια παράσταση του Ant Ballet θα παρουσιαστεί στο Pestival του Σάο Πάολο.
Ants are daunting and fascinating. Somehow, nature has bred the archetypal society at the smallest of scales, one in which every entity knows their role and contributes to the greater good. They live with a basic, unrelenting discipline to their fellow ant.
Ant Ballet is an augmentation of ant societal behaviour. By appealing to their most base instincts–hacking the pheromone signals that ants rely upon for communication. Ollie Palmer was able to study ants, specifically the Argentine ant aka Linepithema Humile, in order to choreograph their movements. Using synthesized pheromones and computer vision system, a robotic arm sprays out pheromone powder (created by UCL Organic Chemistry Department) trails that cause the ants to follow artificial trails in preference to the route they would normally take in search of food. These trails are irresistible for the ants to follow. They’re pulled by the strings of their societal engine thus enabling the designer to build a system a system to direct ants and make them move in a choreographed fashion.
The designer has tested the system in Barcelona because the UK regards the Argentine ant as highly invasive species and wouldn`t allow him to bring live ones with him.
The project is separated into four phases referencing the 1974 sci-fi movie Phase IV. In the film, scientists are puzzled by the complex designs that ants have started building in the desert. The ant colony has in fact undergone rapid evolution as a result of a mysterious cosmic event. Phase I of the Ant Ballet (2010-2012) is the one documented at the FutureEverything exhibition; it covers thorough research into ants and control systems, synthesis of ant pheromones and testing of systems with live ants in Barcelona. Phases II-IV (2012-2015) will develop further technologies, chemicals and mechanisms. In 2013 the first public ant ballet performance will be presented at Pestival Sao Paolo.
