The following photographs presented in the exhibition are the outcome of two 12-week photography courses led by internationally awarded photographer Professor Dr Erieta Attali. The courses are “Urban Anatomy | Spaces in between Spaces” and “Landscape into Architecture | Visual Reflections of Singapore”, offered in the Department of Architecture, National University of Singapore in both 2021 Semester II and 2022 Semester II.

Within those 12 weeks, students are encouraged to use photography as a language to represent Singapore through a context-aware visual perception. Buildings and landscapes exist in a synergistic relationship with Architectural History, Theory and Design, and they build a framework for the analysis and communication of architecture within the context of a larger culture. Photography as a tool records the relationship between artefacts and their environments, or the dipole of building and landscape.
It renders visible and communicable phenomena that are otherwise intangible, such as the atmosphere of changing seasons, circadian rhythms and social structures that are embedded within the built environment and its occupants.
From the historical districts to the predominant high-density residential developments, to commercial hubs and industrial coastal landscapes, the different aspects of Singapore enmesh, and reveal the connection between past, present and future.
Nature, buildings and infrastructure are not seen as isolated objects without contexts, but are understood and presented as being connected to their environment, natural or human made. They are not passive, but rather contain and enable meaningful relationships that are projected outwards throughout the multitude of landscapes of this energetic island city.
This series of photographs is part of the twin photographic exhibition “Entangled Landscapes“, organized by The National University of Singapore (NUS) Department of Architecture, featuring the work of of internationally renowned Architectural Photographer and Visiting Professor at NUS Dr Erieta Attali, as well as students’ photography work from coursework led by Dr Erieta Attali in the NUS Department of Architecture. The exhibition comprises a selection of Attali’s international works which highlight her reading of architecture as part of a larger landscape, in parallel with her students’ works that interpret Singapore through the same lens of continuity between landscape and architecture.
