This project in Milos by Kokosalaki Architecture was inspired by a piece of jewelry by Sophia Kokosalaki, Ascending Mirrors—a pair of sterling silver and mirror earrings made up of three rotating, differently shaped cubes.

Drawing from this concept, we adapted the earring’s form to our building, rotating each component to align with key site views and the natural slope of the land.

The shadows cast by this “earring”-shaped structure define the exterior spaces, creating the illusion of a floating building under the bright summer sun.

We were drawn to the futuristic aesthetic and the way the building appears to hover, like a light intervention within the Cycladic landscape. The ground level was designed as a hidden support, blending seamlessly with the terrain. All secondary elements—such as pergolas, balconies, and windows—on the “earring” components were kept white to blend naturally with the surroundings. The transitional spaces between the cubes, such as the entrance and staircase, function as the earring’s connectors.

Inside, the dynamic shapes and angles of the “earring” significantly shape the atmosphere of the main spaces.

We aimed to create minimal, light-filled interiors with clean lines and a distinctly Cycladic summer ambiance. The futuristic geometry subtly blends with traditional elements, leaving the user with the feeling of being in a classic Cycladic home. This is achieved through the use of typical island materials, such as white walls and cement flooring. Built-in elements in the kitchen, living room, and bedrooms contribute to a cave-like atmosphere, reducing the need for movable furniture.
