Perched on a steep slope overlooking Skroponeri Bay, Folding Terraces, designed by Varvara Christopoulou & Eleni Gkini, is a residential project that seamlessly integrates architecture with the natural topography. The design takes inspiration from the organic movement of traditional Greek mountain paths, creating a dynamic sequence of terraces, plateaus, and dwellings that harmonize with the land’s natural contours.
A Dialogue Between Architecture and Nature
The six residences are strategically arranged in two clusters: three on the upper plateau and three mirrored on the lower level. The complex is crossed by an S shaped road that connects to auxiliary roads, facilitating smooth vehicle circulation to both the upper terraces and the lower levels near the residences’ entrances. Each residence is carefully positioned to maximize unobstructed views of the sea, fostering an immersive connection with the surroundings.
Expansive folded terraces extend outward, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living. The result is a fluid architectural experience where the built environment dissolves into the landscape.
Materiality & Integration
To enhance the project’s integration into its setting, locally sourced stone cladding is applied to the base of each structure, visually softening their height and embedding the structures into the surroundings. The material palette is intentionally minimal, with earthy tones and natural textures that echo the rugged Mediterranean landscape.
A Living Experience Defined by the Landscape
Beyond its architectural composition, Folding Terraces is an exploration of spatial perception and sensory experience. The design carefully frames spectacular views, capturing the essence of coastal living while offering a retreat of tranquility and immersion in nature.
The residences are conceived as sanctuaries where light, air, and materiality interact to shape an atmosphere of relaxation and connection to the elements.
Through its sensitive response to the topography, innovative spatial organization, and conscious material selection, the project redefines the dialogue between contemporary architecture and the Greek landscape.
Folding Terraces is not merely a collection of residences; it is a testament to how thoughtful design can enhance the experience of place, fostering a deep and lasting relationship between people and their natural environment.
