KLab Architecture presents its latest project, a nursery in Glyfada, southern Athens:

The design and construction of public buildings in Greece is problematic, as the architect is not in charge of the construction. One of the biggest challenges of this project was to reintroduce the role of the architect as the essential contributor.

Additionally, we intended to give prominence to the construction method of prefabrication. Prefabrication, one of the conditions of the competition also defined the final form of the building as the basic module would have to be transported on a truck.

The concept of the project was to design a building that would relate to the scale of its users while also introducing a new typology, that of the urban village. The main module draws inspiration from archetypal drawing of a house as perceived by a child. By replicating the basic module thrice, the classroom unit is created.

The nursery school was designed so that all the classrooms have three open sides. As a consequence, the arrangement of the classrooms is organized around a central courtyard while also formed by smaller atriums.

We attempted to employ rather common materials and construction methods in order to create a more complicated structure with a small energy footprint. The exterior walls were constructed 10cm thick allowing us to maximize the available interior area and were cladded, along with the roofs, with exterior wall insulation. Thus, by taking also into consideration the construction of wooden pergolas along the careful placement of the windows on the exterior walls, the building is sustainable providing comfort to the children.

On the other hand, we hope that the vegetation will become an quintessential element of the design as large Platanus trees will provide shade to the interior courtyard while other tree species will highlight the seasonal changes.

Η μελέτη και υλοποίηση δημόσιων κτιρίων στην Ελλάδα είναι προβληματική. Ο τρόπος ανάθεσης, αλλά και η ελλειπής ανάδειξη του αρχικτέκτονα ως του κεντρικού άξονα από την αρχή ως το τέλος της κατασκευής δημιούργησαν μία δημόσια αρχιτεκτονική που τα τελευταία χρόνια είναι χωρίς ταυτότητα.

Μία από τις μεγαλύτερες προκλήσεις σε αυτό το δημόσιο έργο ήταν να σπάσουμε και να αλλάξουμε αυτή την αλληλουχία ενεργειών και να αποκαταστήσουμε το ρόλο του αρχιτέκτονα ως βασικού συντελεστή στη δημιουργία του νέου αυτού κτιρίου. Για να το πετύχουμε αυτό χρειάστηκε επιμονή, υπομονή και ατελείωτες συζητήσεις και συνεννοήσεις με τον Δήμαρχο κυρίως και τον εργολάβο δευτερευόντως.

Μία δεύτερη πρόκληση είναι η ανάδειξη ενός νέου τύπου κατασκευής που και αυτός έχει αρχιτεκτονικά πληγεί στη χώρα μας, την προκατασκευή. Η όλη κατασκευή μεταφέρθηκε από το εργοστάσιο παραγωγής της και ο συνολικός χρόνος υλοποίησης του έργου ήταν 6 μήνες. Η προκατασκευή που ήταν ορισμένη από τα προαπαιτούμενα του διαγωνισμού καθόρισε σημαντικά και τη μορφή του κτιρίου αφού το βασικό module έπρεπε να μεταφέρεται με νταλίκα.

Η κεντρική ιδέα είναι ο παιδικός σταθμός να αναφερθεί στη κλίμακα των χρηστών του και να αναπαραγάγει ένα μοντέλο αστικού χωριού. Η βασική κλίμακα είναι το αρχέτυπο σχέδιο της κατοικίας στα μάτια ενός παιδιού και η επανάληψή του όρισε τις νέες μονάδες όπως της αίθουσας που αποτελείται από 3 module, ή τελικά και του συνόλου του παιδικού σταθμού.

Ο διαγωνισμός είχε απαραίτητα ισόγεια δομή, προκατασκευή και κάλυψη ίση με τη δόμηση. Οι περιορισμένοι κοινόχρηστοι χώροι εσωτερικά στο σταθμό είναι απόρροια αυτών των διατάξεων. Μας ενδιέφερε να αλλάξουμε και τη δομή της εκπαιδευτικής λειτουργίας, αλλά εκεί καθώς και με το πλήθος των υπερβολικών κατά τη γνώμη μας κανονισμών για τη λειτουργία των παιδικών σταθμών βρήκαμε σθεναρή αντίσταση κυρίως από τους εκπαιδευτικούς φορείς του δήμου.

Ο παιδικός σταθμός σχεδιάστηκε με τη λογική όλες οι αίθουσες να έχουν τρεις ελεύθερες πλευρές και συνεπώς η διάταξη γίνεται γύρω από μία κεντρική αυλή, αλλά διαμορφώνεται και με μικρότερα αίθρια που δημιουργούν εσωτερικές θεάσεις από τους κοινόχρηστους χώρους.

Υπήρξε προσπάθεια ώστε απλά υλικά και κοινοί τρόποι κατασκευής να δημιουργήσουν μία πιο ιδιαίτερη κατασκευή που θα είχε μικρό ενεργειακό αποτύπωμα. Οι εξωτερικοί τοίχοι κατασκευάστηκαν με 10 εκ. πάχος έτσι ώστε να έχουμε παραπάνω χώρο εσωτερικά, ζητούμενο από την εξαιρετικά ασφυκτική κάλυψη.

Οι εξωτερικοί τοίχοι και οι στέγες έχουν επικαλυφθεί με εξωτερική μόνωση, μία σχετικά τολμηρή ιδέα αφού δεν έχει ξαναγίνει στην Ελλάδα. Με τον τρόπο αυτό, αλλά και την κατασκευή περγκολών από κόντρα πλακέ θαλάσσης και φυσικά με τη διάταξη των ανοιγμάτων η κατασκευή είναι βιοκλιματική δημιουργώντας συνθήκες άνεσης για τις δραστηριότητες των παιδιών.

Η φύτευση επίσης, θα γίνει ελπίζουμε πολύ γρήγορα βασικό στοιχείο της σύνθεσης αφού μεγάλα πλατάνια θα σκιάζουν την εσωτερική αυλή και άλλα δέντρα θα τονίζουν τη διαφορετικότητα κάθε εποχής.
