NEST PROJECT / ARTEMIS MERKOUREA, IOANNA BOUDOUVA & MARIA PACHI / HONORABLE MENTION AT INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

This design project is a competition entry for the self – construction competition organized by archiSTART and was awarded with an honorable mention. The archistart team allocated a budget for the creation of an installation which will be exhibited in the workshop ‘International Architecture Holiday – IAH Summer 2015’ situated in Ostello del Sole in San Cataldo, close to Lecce.

 

The rigid circle base and the linear axis that links the seaside and the event zone inspired the creation of a passage and a dome that where merged in one structure which provides the campers with a variety of different relaxation areas. A gate introduces the visitor to the main event area through a passage that is transforming gradually to an open amphitheatrical space. Relaxation areas are formed by surfaces where it is possible to step on or to sit allowing at the same time a level of transparency. 

 

The use of lighting is essential so that the structure serves as a vivid area at night. The lights are placed to curves’ edges and to the core of the dome highlighting the entrance and the resting areas.

 

Wood was chosen as the main material of the structure as it is a natural material with load bearing capacity and can be easily treated. Moreover, it is highly reusable and recyclable after the disassembly thus ideal for a temporary articulated structure. In our structure we suggested the use of reclaimed timber. Timber beams are superposed in an easy and fast way. The whole structure works as a scaffolding which is gaining height by climbing on it and superposing each time a layer of beams. 

 

The proposed dimensions of the elements are: 

-7*7 cm beam’s section which can be altered depending on the desired height and the size of the structure

-threaded rods Ø 0.8cm and nuts

-100m rope

-60 light bulbs

The total cost of this structure is approximately 1000 euros depending on the quality and quantity of the elements used.
