OMA, NH Hotel Group, and the developer COD have been announced by the City of Amsterdam, and Amsterdam RAI convention and exhibition centre as the winners of a tender to build the largest hotel in the Netherlands, the nhow Amsterdam RAI. This reflects the need for an on-site, headquarter hotel for Amsterdam RAI, as well as increasing its visibility and integration within the growing Zuidas business district.
“Since the rise of the Zuidas, Amsterdam RAI needed a new urban presence. The prominent advertising pillar `het Signaal` provided inspiration for the nhow Amsterdam RAI hotel: inasmuch part of the new context, as well as an extension of Amsterdam RAI itself,” said OMA partner Reinier de Graaf.
Located on the south-eastern edge of the convention and exhibition centre, the design for the nhow Amsterdam RAI hotel preserves the dense flows of pedestrians, cyclists and automotive traffic that traverse the site. The shifting triangular volumes that comprise the building create a unique presence on Amsterdam`s skyline, and facilitate the integration of public program – including a restaurant, bar, sculpture garden and a live television studio. The construction of the 650-room, 91-metre hotel is planned for 2016. This project marks OMA`s second collaboration with NH Hotels group, after the successful completion of nhow Rotterdam hotel in De Rotterdam in 2014.
