With a strong reference to China`s gardens design, this new Natural History Museum aims to highlight the qualities and the importance of nature without performing an immitation of it. Despite the fact that the museum`s resemblance to the nautilous` cell is more than obvious, this facilitates the function of a rock-formated stepped garden, a vital element of the museum, just as the nautilous` cell fosters its vital system.
Design Principal Ralph Johnson of Perkins+Will architectural firm, who has been working on this project for the last many years, explains that “the building represents the harmony of man and nature, while creating a structural abstraction of Chinese art and design“.
