Denmark’s largest waste management company seeks out help from design students from all over the world to co-create the trash can of the future.
A waste management company called Vestforbrænding, from the environmentally friendly country Denmark, wants design students from all over the world to design a trash can that encourages sustainable behavior in private households.
“Most people want to take care of the environment but when taking out the trash they are often left with the possibility of throwing everything in the same trash can”, says Emilie Müller from Vestforbrænding.
’Sort Your Trash Can’ is the name of the international idea challenge, which strives to provide inspiration for the trash can of the future; one that challenges the traditional design with only one chamber.
Implementing an online co-creation process between designer, producer and end user, the contest strives to bring products to market that better meet the users’ needs and potentially gives the producers more trust in producing them.
Recently, the Danish government supported the creation of the world’s first non-profit innovation and co-creation platform Join.dk where design students can upload their ideas.
The challenge runs three months from the 28th of July to the 28th of October 2012 and you can learn more by visiting the website www.sortyourtrashcan.com.
