The former studio of painter Daan Wildschut (1913-1995) situated in national monument ‘De Heiligenberg’ in Bunde, Netherlands has been transformed by Maastricht-based design studio De Nieuwe Context into an open space guest house setting light and colour – two crucial aspects in wildschut’s work – as the main axes of the renovation.
Light and color – just like in Wildschut’s work – form the basis for the design. The open-plan character of the former atelier has been preserved as well as its large openings so that the sunlight can penetrate the living space.
The project unfolds around a mint green staircase which stands at the center of the space as an inhabited sculpture that allows residents to access the upper floor while also accommodating a set of storage cabinets. Wooden contemporary interventions have been installed throughout the space making it more cozy and warm.
Ecological building materials have been used throughout the restoration procedure while materials used indoors meet ecological standards and contribute to a pleasant indoor microclimate.
