Weaving Metal Strips, Larisa, Greece
Part I : 9 – 10th, April
Part II : 16 – 17th, April
Exhibition : 23 – 24th, April
Abstract
Computational tools require new ways of thinking. The parametric tools and digital fabrication techniques, as the case of CNC (computer numerical control) machines, challenge the traditional perception by raising an open framework for thinking about design as a way of accumulation of different possibilities. Both, provide an effective connection between design and production and enable the construction of projects into scale 1:1.
During this 7th intensive workshop, participants will have the opportunity to investigate methods and construction processes of a coherent design methodology, from concept to realization: modeling, manufacturing, assembling. The goal of the workshop is to combine technological precision and creativity and connect architects with the local industries and companies which provide the material and machinery. At this workshop we will work with a waterjet cutting machine ( in previous workshops, punching and laser was used)
Participants will understand from early stage, strategies and construction details in order to transform complex 3D geometries to constructible elements. Using as a platform Rhino5 and Grasshopper, through a series of algorithmic strategies for interactive simulation and design optimization, they will explore the creative potential of the emerging and dynamic phenomena and they will design and fabricate small prototypes. As a result they will gain experience and sense of time and cost based on the complexity and material usage.
Methodology
The theoretical classes will establish the tools that will be directly applied and used as a platform for testing ideas in order to facilitate the production of real physical projects from 2D sheet of a desired material. Using the Rhino or Grasshopper tools, each team will formulate a strategy to create a variation of a system and a free-form structure. The objective is to design a self supporting object with structural rigidity. Participants will follow all the steps necessary for the preparation of the cutting drawings and will be introduced to the production process and CNC manufacturing techniques. Last session is intended for organizing the parts for the post-production and assembly.
Agenda
The agenda is organized as two independent classes: Rhino_Fabrication (beginners) and Grasshopper_Fabrication (advanced) with the possibility to attend both, including visit to the machine industry and a final exhibition.
Part I : Rhino_Fabrication
3D Modeling and Prototyping
During the first part of the workshop participants will gain experience with Rhino3D tools and design strategies in order to be introduced to the process from concept to construction: modeling, digital fabrication, assembling. They will be asked to design and construct an object, which will keep after the end of the workshop and will be exposed in present and future exhibitions. They will naturally come to understand constrain aspects of material behavior, reduction of fabrication cost, CNC techniques, assembling systems, etc. After the end of the weekend classes will follow visit to the industry and the construction phase.
Event Location: WISEDOG , Σκυλοσόφου 3, Λάρισα.
Aimed to: Our team is always open for feedback from creative practitioners of all design and manufacturing fields.
Prerequisites: Basic CAD is welcome.
Hardware: Personal laptop.
Duration: 2 days weekend classes (10:00- 17:00), 1 day machine visit and cutting, 1 day assembling, depending the participant and machine availability.
Software: Rhinoceros 5 installed.
Evaluation version at: official website.
Teaching language: English, Greek.
Part II : Grasshopper_Fabrication
Algorithmic design and prototyping
A set of exercises will establish the tools that will be directly applied and used as a platform for testing ideas and the creation of physical objects of higher complexity. Participants will work on individual or group projects, gaining experience with the parametric tools of Grasshopper plug-in inside Rhino. They will naturally come to understand constrain aspects of material behavior, reduction of fabrication cost, CNC techniques, assembling systems, etc. After the end of the weekend classes will follow visit to the industry and the construction phase.
