 “Alice in Dataland ” thesis by Marina Avouri explores a speculative design of four interventions in the city of Patras in 2065, prompted from the story of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

The subject of the Thesis is the speculative design of four points in a 2065 AD version of the city of Patras. The design process is prompted from the story of “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll (1865). The four points define the chapters of a new narrative. In the new version of the story the main character is X-ALICE_42. She is a cyborg: an augmented human who carries equipment which connects her permanently to the Cloud augmenting her physical environment. X-ALICE visits four points in the city: The “Fiber Hole”, the “Data Memorial”, the “Disconnected Field” and the “Relay Observatory”. These points are essential urban infrastructures that meet the needs of citizens in future Patras. Each point refers to a different part of Carroll’s original story.

1_The “Fiber Hole”. Similar to Alice’s fall into the Rabbit Hole, X-ALICE, while walking through an arcade of Patras, falls into a manhole. She lands in the underground piping network of the city. The increasing needs for information transmission have resulted in large fiber optic tunnels. X-ALICE wanders through the tunnels of the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) and the Wide Area Network (WAN) until she finds the next manhole leading back to the surface of the city.

2_The “Data Memorial”. This is where digital souls of the dead citizens are stored. The building serves as both a data center and a cemetery. It is placed at the edge of a pier at the old port of the city, into the sea. The “Data Memorial” consists of two distinct parts: a compact underwater base, where information is stored in racks of servers, and a light structure above the sea level. In the latter, visitors can access information of the deceased in individual cubicles. The point is related to Alice’s “lake of tears” in the original story as both refer to sorrow and the element of water.

3_The “Disconnected Field”. In this technological version of the city, where reality is augmented by digital information, the need for off-line spaces has been born. A new architectural typology is created into the urban voids of the city. The Field is a curved Faraday Cage which blocks the electromagnetic signals. It is placed on a new level over the humble constructions of the void. At the top surface of the Cage a grid of beams runs which supports some spherical capsules. These are constructed by radiation resistant materials which further isolate the users. The blockade of signal is related to the locked doors Alice comes across around the hall after her fall.

4_The “Relay Observatory”. The signals in Patras of 2065 have multiplied and the 5G network is supported by gigantic antennas. These primary antennas relay the signal to others, smaller. The “Relay Observatory” is placed at the top part of the city, based on an old block of flats. It is consisted of a thin needle shaped core and a perimetric ring which hosts an observatory as well as a Master Switching Center. The geometry and the program of the observatory refers to the physical transformation that happened to the original Alice, as her neck elongated over the forest. X-ALICE_42 finishes her stroll at the “Relay Observatory” taking a general night view of the augmented 2065 city.

Η Διπλωματική Eργασία έχει ως αντικείμενο τον υποθετικό σχεδιασμό τεσσάρων σημείων στην Πάτρα του 2065 μ.Χ. με αφετηρία την αφήγηση της Αλίκης στη Χώρα των Θαυμάτων του Lewis Carroll (1865). Τα τέσσερα σημεία, έχουν ως βάση τη μελέτη αποσπασμάτων του παραμυθιού και συνθέτουν μια εναλλακτική αφήγηση στην επερχόμενη Πόλη των Δικτύων. Πρωταγωνίστρια αυτής της αφήγησης είναι η X-ALICE_42. Η X-ALICE κινείται στο κέντρο της μελλοντικής Πάτρας, επισκεπτόμενη τέσσερις αστικές υποδομές που εξυπηρετούν ανάγκες της νέας υπερ-τεχνολογικής εκδοχής της πόλης:

1_Το «Πληροφοριακό Λαγούμι» έχει ως αναφορά το λαγούμι του λαγού στο πρωτότυπο παραμύθι. Οι ανάγκες της μελλοντικής Πάτρας για μετάδοση πληροφοριών εντός και εκτός των ορίων της, έχουν γιγαντωθεί με αποτέλεσμα την εξάπλωση ενός υπόγειου τηλεπικοινωνιακού δικτύου στο οποίο προσγειώνεται η X-ALICE.

2_Το «Κενοτάφιο Δεδομένων» αναφέρεται στη «λίμνη των δακρύων» της Αλίκης του Carroll. Τοποθετείται στην άκρη του μόλου της Αγίου Νικολάου. Εκεί αποθηκεύονται και αναπαράγονται τα ψηφιακά ίχνη των εκλιπόντων κατοίκων της πόλης. Το κτίριο λειτουργεί ταυτόχρονα ως data center και ως μνήμα.

3_Το «Πεδίο Αποσύνδεσης» συνδέεται με τις κλειδωμένες πόρτες της πρωτότυπης αφήγησης. Στην μόνιμα διασυνδεδεμένη εκδοχή της Πάτρας του 2065, γεννιέται η ανάγκη του ενεργητικού off-line. Δημιουργείται έτσι μια νέα τυπολογία δημόσιου χώρου, απομονωμένη από τα ηλεκτρονικά δίκτυα, που χρησιμοποιεί υλικά ανθεκτικά στην Η/Μ ακτινοβολία.

4_Το «Παρατηρητήριο Αναμετάδοσης» έχει ως βάση την επιμήκυνση του λαιμού της Αλίκης στο δάσος. Στην μελλοντική εκδοχή της Πάτρας ορισμένες από τις κεραίες στα δώματα των πολυκατοικιών γιγαντώνονται και καταλαμβάνουν πρωτεύοντα ρόλο στην αναμετάδοση του σήματος 5G. Σε μια τέτοια κεραία-παρατηρητήριο, στο πάνω μέρος της σκάλας της Γεροκωστοπούλου, ολοκληρώνεται η υβριδική περιπλάνηση της X-ALICE στην Πόλη των Δικτύων.
