City, sea, man. The interrelation between these notions constitutes the core of the research. What kind of relation is developed between man and the sea, within an urban environment? How is it impressed on space and how is it studied?

These thoughts are worked out via the case of the city of Patras, Greece. The deactivation of the urban port dredged up the issue of the relation between the city and the sea. The seafront is, by far, the focal point of the whole issue. As what is the seafront defined? What part does it play in the relation between the city and the sea and how is this dictated by the human presence and activity along the seafront? 

 

2 different wanderings constitute the research. A historic, mnemonic one, during which the alterations in the seafront’s image and it’s relation to the city are revealed, and an on-site wandering along the seafront, during which not only it’s spatial qualities are studied, but it’s social dimension as well.

 

The seafront is conceived as a field, where human activities coexist and conflict. A scenery full of human moments, in other words. The research is complemented by the study of 4 cases of waterfront redevelopment, during which 2 different approaches of the relation between the waterfront and the city are depicted. These are the cases of the cities of Volos – GR, Thessaloniki – GR, Rotterdam – NL and Aarhus – DK.

 

 

 

Πόλη, θάλασσα, άνθρωπος. Οι συσχετίσεις ανάμεσα στις παραπάνω έννοιες συγκρότησαν τον προβληματισμό της έρευνας. Σε τί συνίσταται η σχέση που αναπτύσσει ο άνθρωπος με τη θάλασσα, εντός ενός αστικού περιβάλλοντος; Πώς αποτυπώνεται στο χώρο και πώς διερευνάται;

 

Η έρευνα επεξεργάζεται αυτές τις σκέψεις μέσω της περίπτωσης της Πάτρας. Η απενεργοποίηση του αστικού λιμανιού πυροδότησε τον προβληματισμό γύρω από τη σχέση της πόλης με τη θάλασσα. Το παράκτιο μέτωπο στο επίκεντρο. Ως τί ορίζεται; Ποιός είναι ο ρόλος του στη σχέση της πόλης με τη θάλασσα και πώς αυτός υπαγορεύεται μέσω της κατοίκησης του μετώπου από τον άνθρωπο; 

 

Την έρευνα συγκροτούν 2 περιπλανήσεις. Μία ιστορική, μνημοτεχνική περιπλάνηση, όπου αποκαλύπτονται οι μεταβολές της εικόνας του μετώπου και της σχέσης του με την πόλη, και μία επί τόπου περιπλάνηση στο παράκτιο μέτωπο, όπου διαβάζονται όχι μόνο οι χωρικές ποιότητές του, αλλά και η ανθρωποκεντρική του διάσταση. Το μέτωπο γίνεται αντιληπτό ως ένα πεδίο συνύπαρξης και σύγκρουσης ανθρώπινων δραστηριοτήτων, ως ένα σκηνικό ανθρώπινων στιγμών.

 

Την έρευνα συμπληρώνει η μελέτη 4 περιπτώσεων επέμβασης στο παράκτιο μέτωπο άλλων πόλεων, μέσω της οποίας αναδεικνύονται 2 αντιθετικές προσεγγίσεις της σχέσης του μετώπου με την πόλη. Πρόκειται για τις περιπτώσεις του Βόλου, της Θεσσαλονίκης, του Rotterdam και του Aarhus.
