THE TRIPLETS OF EVRIPIDOU BY N. KARAGIANNI, E. LILI, S. STILIDIS & A. CHARALAMPIDOU / POSTGRADUATE STUDIO INSTEAD, UN. OF THESSALY

The cognitive framework of this specific workshop rests upon the belief that in order to transform the city, it is mandatory to change the way someone looks at it at first. Surpassing the obsession with the architectural conception and avoiding the interpretation of architecture throughout technocratic terms, the city is read as a collection of capabilities and actions, a gathering of activities and living spaces. In an area such as Evripidou, where the architectural stock is redundant and the buildings look like “containers pending content”, recognizing the positive features, the opportunities and the challenges, has been a catalyst action in the formation of an idea that utilizes this urban condition and helps it to be released from the inertia that suffers the recent years. 

 

Three successive buildings have been selected on this street to participate in this design experiment. The adjacency of three different architectural forms whose common denominator is the dereliction, constitutes a real challenge. The triplet was treated like a battery in which the flow of the uses activates all the three elements. The proximity of the university led to the choice of student dormitories as a potential use of the buildings. The program has been enriched with public spaces, leisure spaces and workplaces to transform the empty shells into life capacitors around the clock.

 

There is an escalation of the character of the uses, starting from the purely public in the first building-the old Minion shopping mall- hosting in its floors a library, projection rooms, a film library and a cafeteria, spaces that are open to anyone interested in the city and especially to the residents of the other two buildings of the triplet. In the next building, there is a condition of a controlled “semi-public” residence with communal spaces (kitchens, living rooms, gathering places), but only accessible by the tenants of the dormitories. The dormitories follow, in the third building, with purely private-rooms, communicating with the common spaces through perforations created in these two buildings. An intermediate buffer zone runs through all the three buildings, alternating the open to closed spaces, and encourages the creation of “events” in a ribbon where the Attic landscape dominates.

 

 

 

Η Τριπλέτα της Ευριπίδου

 

Κινητήρια δύναμη του συγκεκριμένου εργαστηρίου αποτέλεσε η πεποίθηση ότι για να μετατραπεί η πόλη πρέπει πρώτα να αλλάξει ο τρόπος με τον οποίο κανείς τη βλέπει. Ξεπερνώντας την εμμονή με την αρχιτεκτονική σύλληψη και αποφεύγοντας την ερμηνεία της αρχιτεκτονικής με τεχνοκρατικούς όρους, η πόλη διαβάζεται ως μια συλλογή ικανοτήτων και ενεργειών, μια συνάθροιση δραστηριοτήτων και χώρων διαβίωσης. Σε μια περιοχή όπως η Ευριπίδου, όπου το αρχιτεκτονικό απόθεμα πλεονάζει και τα κτίρια μοιάζουν με «δοχεία εν αναμονή περιεχομένου», η αναγνώριση των θετικών στοιχείων, των ευκαιριών και των προκλήσεων αποτέλεσε καταλύτη στη διαμόρφωση μιας ιδέας που αξιοποιεί αυτή την αστική συνθήκη και την απεγκλωβίζει από την αδράνεια που την διέπει τα τελευταία χρόνια. 

 

Επιλέγονται λοιπόν, 3 διαδοχικά κτίρια επί της οδού για να συμμετέχουν σε αυτό το σχεδιαστικό πείραμα. Πρόκληση αποτέλεσε η γειτνίαση τριών διαφορετικών αρχιτεκτονικών μορφών των οποίων κοινός παρονομαστής είναι η ερείπωση. Η τριπλέτα αντιμετωπίστηκε σαν μια μπαταρία μέσα στην οποία η ροή των χρήσεων ενεργοποιεί και τα 3 στοιχεία. Η εγγύτητα της περιοχής με τα πανεπιστήμια οδήγησε στην επιλογή των φοιτητικών εστιών ως δυνητική χρήση των κτιρίων. Το πρόγραμμα επενδύεται με κοινόχρηστους χώρους, τόπους αναψυχής και εργασίας ώστε να μετατραπούν τα άδεια αυτά κελύφη σε πυκνωτές ζωής ολόκληρο το εικοσιτετράωρο.

 

Υπάρχει μια κλιμάκωση του χαρακτήρα το χρήσεων που ξεκινά από το καθαρά δημόσιο στο πρώτο κτίριο –το παλιό Μινιόν- που φιλοξενεί στους ορόφους του βιβλιοθήκη, χώρους προβολών, ταινιοθήκη και καφετέρια, χώρους δηλαδή ανοιχτούς σε κάθε ενδιαφερόμενο της πόλης και κυρίως στους ενοίκους των άλλων δύο κτιρίων της τριπλέτας. Στο επόμενο κτίριο ακολουθεί μια συνθήκη ελεγχόμενης «ημι-δημόσιας» κατοίκησης με κοινόχρηστους χώρους (κουζίνες, καθιστικά, χώρους συγκέντρωσης), προσβάσιμους όμως μόνο από τους ενοίκους των εστιών. Και ακολουθούν οι εστίες, με τους καθαρά ιδιωτικούς χώρους των δωματίων, που επικοινωνούν με τους κοινόχρηστους μέσω διατρήσεων που έχουν δημιουργηθεί στα δύο αυτά κτίρια. Μια ενδιάμεση ουδέτερη ζώνη διατρέχει και τα τρία κτίρια, εναλλάσσοντας τους ανοιχτούς με τους κλειστούς χώρους, και ενθαρρύνει τη δημιουργία «συμβάντων», σε μια κορδέλα όπου το αττικό τοπίο κυριαρχεί όπου και αν στρέψεις το βλέμμα σου.
